Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai, born on October 31, 1760, was a renowned Japanese artist who made significant contributions to the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints and painting during the Edo period.

Hokusai was born in Edo, present-day Tokyo, Japan, and initially began his artistic journey as an apprentice to a woodblock carver at a young age. He later became a student of the ukiyo-e painter Katsukawa Shunshō, where he honed his skills in traditional Japanese painting techniques.

Throughout his long and productive career, Hokusai adopted various artistic names and produced a vast body of work spanning a wide range of subjects. He was particularly known for his landscape prints, which depicted natural scenes, mountains, rivers, and waves.
