Kawase Hasui

Kawase Hasui was a renowned Japanese artist known for his skill in woodblock printing, specifically in the genre of landscape prints. He played a significant role in the revival and popularization of theShin-Hanga ("new print") movement during the early 20th century.

Born on May 18, 1883, in Tokyo, Japan, Hasui initially pursued a career as a painter and studied Western-style painting at the Kawabata Painting School. However, he later turned his attention to ukiyo-e, the traditional Japanese art form of woodblock prints, after being inspired by the works of Kiyochika Kobayashi, a prominent printmaker of the time.

Under the guidance of master printmaker Shozaburo Watanabe, Hasui honed his skills in woodblock printing and started producing landscape prints, capturing the beauty of Japan's natural landscapes and architectural landmarks. His subjects often included scenic vistas, tranquil gardens, temples, shrines, and rural landscapes.
Throughout his career, Hasui created a vast body of work, producing approximately six hundred prints.

Kawase Hasui's art gained international recognition and was widely exhibited in Japan and abroad. His prints were highly sought after by collectors and admirers of Japanese art. He received numerous awards throughout his career, and his work was instrumental in promoting the Shin-Hanga ("new prints") movement, which aimed to revitalize traditional woodblock printing techniques with a modern twist.
