Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist known for her pioneering work in abstract art, particularly her spiritual and mystical approach to painting. One of her most notable works is the Altarpiece, a series of large-scale paintings created between 1906 and 1915.

The Altarpiece consists of ten canvases, each measuring approximately 3 meters in height and 2 meters in width. The paintings are meant to be displayed together, forming a monumental composition that represents a spiritual journey.

The series begins with the painting "The Dove," which features a white dove against a blue background, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. The subsequent paintings depict various stages of spiritual awakening, with abstract shapes and colors representing different aspects of the divine.

The central panel, "The Swan," features a large swan surrounded by concentric circles, symbolizing the unity of all things in the universe. The final panel, "The Altar," shows a pyramid-like structure with a golden sphere at its apex, representing the ultimate goal of spiritual enlightenment.

The Altarpiece was created several years before the first abstract paintings of artists like Kandinsky and Mondrian, making Hilma af Klint a pioneer of abstract art.
