Watanabe Seitei

Watanabe Seitei (1851-1918), also known as Watanabe Shōtei, was a prominent Japanese artist during the Meiji period.

Seitei initially trained in the Kano school, a traditional style of Japanese painting that emphasized formal and precise depictions of subjects. However, he later became interested in the more expressive and naturalistic style of the Maruyama-Shijō school. This shift in his artistic approach was influenced by his exposure to Western art techniques and ideas that were introduced to Japan during the Meiji Restoration.

Seitei excelled in the genre of bird-and-flower painting (kachōga), capturing the delicate beauty and grace of birds, flowers, and other natural elements. His compositions often featured meticulous attention to detail, exquisite brushwork, and a refined sense of harmony. He had a particular affinity for painting birds, and his depictions were highly regarded for their accuracy and lifelike quality.

Apart from his expertise in painting, Seitei also excelled in other artistic mediums, including woodblock printing and ceramics. He collaborated with leading publishers to produce illustrated books and prints.

Throughout his career, Watanabe Seitei received various accolades and held prestigious positions, including becoming a member of the Imperial Art Academy and receiving the Order of the Rising Sun, one of Japan's highest honours.
