Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau, born on May 21, 1844, initially pursued a career as a government customs officer, but began painting as a hobby in his late 30s, inspired by the art he encountered during visits to the museums of Paris.

He is considered one of the most prominent self-taught artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rousseau's unique style and imaginative depictions earned him a significant place in the art world, particularly in the movement known as Naïve or Primitive art.

Rousseau's paintings are characterized by their bold, vibrant colours, flattened perspective, and meticulous detail. His subjects often depicted exotic landscapes, lush jungles, and wild animals, influenced by his fascination with botanical gardens and visits to the Paris Zoo. Rousseau's depictions of nature were not based on first-hand experience but were instead inspired by books, postcards, and visits to botanical gardens.

Rousseau faced criticism and ridicule from the established art community during his lifetime, as his unconventional style and lack of technical expertise did not conform to the prevailing artistic trends of the time. However, his work garnered admiration and support from younger artists, including Pablo Picasso and the Surrealists, who saw in Rousseau's art a raw and unadulterated vision.
