Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian, born on March 7, 1872, in Amersfoort, Netherlands was a Dutch artist who is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstract art and a leading figure of the De Stijl movement.

Mondrian initially trained as a landscape artist before gradually moving towards abstraction. He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and was influenced by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements. However, his style evolved over time, and he gradually moved towards abstraction. He developed a distinctive visual language characterized by simplified geometric forms and a limited colour palette.

Mondrian's most iconic works are known for their use of horizontal and vertical lines, along with primary colours (red, blue, and yellow) and non-colours (black, white, and grey). He aimed to express universal harmony and spiritual order through his art, distilling reality to its essential elements.

One of his significant contributions to the art world was the development of the concept of Neoplasticism, also known as De Stijl. This movement advocated for the reduction of art to its purest form, emphasizing geometry and a strict adherence to straight lines and right angles, creating balance and rhythm.
