Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai, born on October 31, 1760, was a renowned Japanese artist who made significant contributions to the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints and painting during the Edo period.

Hokusai was born in Edo, present-day Tokyo, Japan, and initially began his artistic journey as an apprentice to a woodblock carver at a young age. He later became a student of the ukiyo-e painter Katsukawa Shunshō, where he honed his skills in traditional Japanese painting techniques.

Throughout his long and productive career, Hokusai adopted various artistic names and produced a vast body of work spanning a wide range of subjects. He was particularly known for his landscape prints, which depicted natural scenes, mountains, rivers, and waves.

Aside from landscapes, Hokusai was also known for his dynamic and expressive portrayals of animals, mythical creatures, and supernatural beings. He had a particular fascination with the sea and often incorporated marine themes into his works.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Hokusai was also an avid teacher and wrote instructional manuals on painting and drawing.
